History of Science Centre Singapore in a Nutshell

The Science Centre Singapore, formerly the Singapore Science Centre, is a renowned institution in Jurong East, Singapore. It's dedicated to promoting scientific and technological education for the public, featuring over 850 exhibits in eight galleries, attracting over a million visitors annually.

Born from a 1969 proposal by the former Science Council of Singapore, it was established to shift the focus on science and technology, allowing the National Museum of Singapore to preserve its artistic and historical collections.

Designed by Raymond Woo architects, the Science Centre opened on December 10, 1977, adding Singapore's only OMNIMAX theatre, the Omni-Theatre, in 1987. A $38 million renovation in 1999 expanded its exhibition spaces, introduced a new entrance, and connected to the Omni-Theatre.

In 2000, Snow City, replicating sub-zero temperatures, became an attraction. In 2007, marking its 30th anniversary, it rebranded as the Science Centre Singapore. Today, it is a hub for science and technology education, committed to educating, engaging, and entertaining visitors in the fascinating world of science.

Who Built the Science Centre Singapore?

The design of the SCS building emerged from a rigorous architectural competition orchestrated by the Science Centre Board. Among the submissions, Raymond Woo architects' proposal emerged victorious. Erected at a cost of S$12 million, it occupies a sprawling 60,000-square-metre (650,000 sq ft) site in Jurong East.

This architectural marvel was formally unveiled on December 10, 1977, with Dr. Toh Chin Chye, the Minister-in-charge of the centre, presiding over the inauguration.
